NER Recovery of the Month Award
Issued to the Lamar County Sheriff's Office

Investigators with the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation in March that resulted in the recovery of over $1 million of stolen farm equipment and cargo.

Acting on an anonymous tip, Sheriff Joseph “Joe” Buice sent an investigator in an undercover capacity in an attempt to purchase a $41,000 tractor for $4,000. As the transaction was to take place in neighboring Pike County Georgia. Lamar County officials notified Pike County Sheriff Jimmy Thomas and a joint operation was initiated.

Undercover officers from Pike and Lamar Counties moved into northern Pike County and, as the purchase was in progress, the officers moved in and recovered six more new John Deere tractors that had been recently stolen. Further investigation by the officers resulted in the recovery of nine out of ten new John Deere tractors that had been part of a cargo theft that occurred in the Augusta area several days earlier.

The joint action by Lamar and Pike County investigators has exposed a large cargo and equipment theft operation working throughout Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama and resulted in the arrest of seven individuals and the recovery of over $1 million of stolen property. The investigation is ongoing and promises to resolve many outstanding cargo and equipment theft cases in Georgia and Tennessee.

April’s Recovery of the Month is jointly awarded to Lamar and Pike Counties. Plaques will be sent to both agencies.
