Lamar L.E.X. was created in August 2007 in an attempt to brige the gap between local law enforcement and high school students. Through the support of the Sheriff, Lamar LEX has since grown, not only in size, but in recognition and level of respect as well. In it's first year of operation L.E.X. members experienced several different aspects of law enforcement and community service that, under normal conditions, high school students would not get to see.
All activities planned for students are centered on building confidence; education of Georgia law, developing community oriented assisting skills, and education of law enforcement procedures. Members have experienced rappelling, building confidence as they navigate a 65 foot rappel tower. Members have worked mock crime scenes, where students get to experience the popular field of Crime Scene Investigations. Students have been given the opportunity to work with younger children of the community, assisting with fingerprint identity cards for primary students as a way of protecting them in the unfortunate event of something happening to them.
Currently Lamar L.E.X. has 11 members, only 4 shy of the 15 member cap. L.E.X. members are issued a specially disigned uniform, designating them from a law enforcement officer, but symbolizing them with the program. This uniform helps in the confidence building of our students. The uniform is also a way of creating a bond between our members. This bond has proven to create friendships between students that may not have been there prior to them entering.
It has been my pleasure to work with this program and help shape it. As we stride to work out the "wrinkles" that all new programs have, we will be expanding it even further. With cooperation of Gordon College we will be creating a program that will be designed for college students under the age of 21, staring in the winter semester. With the scholarships that are presently available for our high school students, and the expected addition of new college student members, we can ensure a bright future for all L.E.X. members.
