Jail Operations Division
Captain Reginald Sutton, Jail Administrator
Stephanie Melton, Administrative Assistant
770-358-5151

Reginald Sutton, a three year veteran of the Griffin Police Department, and the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputy Program, was recently promoted to the rank of Captain with the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office by Sheriff Larry Waller. Captain Sutton has assumed the command of Jail Administration.

Captain Sutton holds dual Bachelor Degrees in Business Administration and Computer Information Systems from Union College in Kentucky.  He is currently in the process of completing his Master’s in Public Administration from Columbus State University with completion scheduled for early 2013.  Captain Sutton’s career with Law Enforcement began in 2005-2009 as a Correctional Officer with the Georgia Department of Corrections in Forsyth, Georgia, and in 2007 also worked part time with the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office as a Jailer. In 2009 he began working as a Patrol Officer for the Griffin Police Department and he continued with the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office as a Reserve Deputy.

Captain Sutton currently holds both Intermediate and Advanced Certificates from the State of Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.).  He also holds Jailer and Basic Law Enforcement POST Certifications both completed in 2009 and SWAT Certification (2010) and GCIC Mobile Data Terminal Certification completed in 2011.

Captain Sutton resides in Lamar County with his wife, Susan. He has four children, Logan, 21, Lexie, 18, Reggie, 9 and Marcoiya, 7.  In his spare time, Captain Sutton enjoys spending time with his wife and family, volunteering at his church, golf, weight training, hunting and going on Mission trips, which include trips to Jamaica, Haiti, and Honduras.

The jail's function is to receive, and process people that are taken into custody by various law enforcement agencies within Lamar County. Once a person has been turned over to the jail, they are either given an opportunity to post a bond and be released pending a court hearing or held until the courts dispose of their case.
Once a person is convicted and sentenced to either county time or state time, they are held until their sentence is served in accordance to law or transferred into a state facility. The jail has a staff of 21 sworn jailers. The jail was built in 1992 and has a total bed capacity of 152 beds. Male inmates that are serving a county or city sentence are used in various departments within the county and city to do community service saving the taxpayers hundreds of dollars.
