Appearance Bonds A bond can be made at any time, day or night, to release an inmate from jail, provided he/she is charged with a bondable offense and a bond amount has been set by proper authority. There are, in general, two types of bonds to guarantee appearance in court: cash and surety.
A cash bond can be accepted as cash, money order, or bank check. No personal checks will be accepted. A surety bond means that real property has been pledged guaranteeing appearance in court on a specific date, or as notified. As a general rule, equity in the property pledged must be at least twice the amount of the bond.
O.C.G.A. 15-16-21(c)(7) provides that a Sheriff's fee for taking a bond in a criminal case shall be $13.00, paid in advance, prior to the Sheriff rendering such service. The Lamar County Sheriff will accept the $13.00 fee in the form of cash or a cashier's check, or money order made payable to the order of "Sheriff of Lamar County". A personal check will not be accepted.
A surety bond for Lamar County can be made in another Georgia county for release in this county. This is referred to as a "Transfer Bond". The Sheriff or his authorized deputy in the other county will have to approve the surety on the bond. We will accept a properly approved transfer bond from another Georgia county.
Additionally, certain professional bonding companies have been approved by the Sheriff to sign surety bonds in Lamar County. Professional bonding companies are regulated by state law and any transaction with one of these companies is between the inmate and that company. Lamar County Sheriff's Office policy strictly prohibits its employees from recommending or otherwise assisting professional bonding companies in the operation of their business.
Inmate Handbook Upon incarceration in the Lamar County Jail, all inmates are issued the "Lamar County Detention Center Handbook", informing them of the rules, regulations, and procedures of the facility, along with the notice to know and abide by these directives and regulations.
